I am a population health researcher with diverse experience across fields including global and migrant health, infectious diseases and mental health. I am particularly interested in how global diseases have an impact in specific local populations, including migrants and other marginalised groups. Most of my research has focused on tuberculosis (TB) and its bidirectional intersections with stress, mental health and stigma, in both high- and low-incidence settings. I have used mixed methods and participatory approaches to answer these questions, with a particular interest in the use of co-design to work with affected communities to develop impactful interventions.
I am currently Chief Investigator/Co-Lead Applicant for a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Award entitled 'Tackling the Repercussions of UK-based Stigma towards Tuberculosis (TRUST): a participatory study to co-design a stigma reduction intervention’. In this project, we are working with TB patients, their friends and family, and healthcare workers to understand their experiences of TB stigma and work together to co-develop an intervention to tackle it within the NHS.
In my PhD from St George's, University of London, entitled 'The relationship between psychosocial stress, mental health, immune function, and tuberculosis risk among migrants', I carried out mixed methods research including systematic reviews, epidemiological analyses of large datasets, qualitative interview analysis and quantitative analysis of psychometric and laboratory data.
Prior to this, I worked at King’s College London (Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, 2019) as well as placements/attachments at Harvard University (Harvard Centre for Population and Development Studies, 2019), University of Copenhagen (Research Centre for Migration, Ethnicity and Health, 2020-2024) and University of Cape Town (Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa, 2022). I have also worked within non-academic research environments, including policy (consultancy with World Health Organization, HIV Department, 2019) and charity sectors (TB Proof, South Africa, 2022). I hold an MSc Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a BSc (Hons.) Human Sciences from University of Oxford.
